This is a book that connects two centuries and a family that lived in a magical city. This is a fictionalized history of the city composed of short chapters in dialogue format between Esperanza Chappory, who died more than 120 years ago, and the author, Enrique Sancho Bisquerra. A book that will make us discover the city of Tangier through the intertwined stories of her great-aunt and grand-nephew.
Esperanza is also a name, that of a girl who died at the age of 14 in Tangier, but who is still with us. Esperanza in Tangier is not only the story of a girl, it is the memories of its inhabitants, the sounds of its streets, the taste of its food and, of course, the history of Tangier. A city at peace in a world at war.
The Chappory family was from Tangier of English origin. A family of great fortune that with the passage of time and circumstances fell into decline, if not nothing. Their grand mansion, called Villa Eugenia, with its more than 30,000 metres of garden, has now been converted into three gruesome buildings. But one thing has not changed in all these years: the view of the Strait of Gibraltar, the meeting point of two worlds. of garden, has now been converted into three gruesome buildings. But one thing has not changed in all these years: the view of the Strait of Gibraltar, the meeting point of two worlds.
Enrique Sancho Bisquerra was born in Mallorca in 1951. He spent his childhood with his uncles, the Chappory family, spending summers in Tangier and winters in Madrid.
Enrique has always believed that an idea can change the world, an enterprising person who at the age of 16 became independent in pursuit of his dreams. An adventurer who was never afraid of making mistakes. Throughout his life he has undertaken businesses and projects, all with the intention of changing the reality in which he lived.
With a fear of airplanes but not afraid of flying, over time he changed Tangier and Madrid for Israel and New York. But always maintaining the longing for those summers in Villa Eugenia.
Today he is retired in Mallorca, the place where he was born. On the shores of the Mediterranean he faces his last great adventure: Esperanza in Tangier
This book reminds us with nostalgia of the past and transmits a feeling of optimism in the present, giving us wings to believe in hope for the future.
Enrique, with his stories and dialogues, knows how to capture this feeling perfectly. Whether you are from Tangier or not, whether you know it from close up or from afar, its history can teach you that there is room in the world for hope. People from Spain, Italy or Germany never lived there. People from Tangier always lived there who did not ask themselves where they came from. A community of people in peace was created.
